How to read climbing density
Metres climbed per kilometre makes courses of different lengths easier to compare. It does not describe how the climbing is arranged: one long ascent, repeated short hills and rough technical ground can share the same headline number.
GPX analysis is most useful alongside a route map and the organiser’s written instructions. It cannot identify unsafe ground, private access, river conditions, navigation difficulty or last-minute diversions.
