The numbers are manufacturer-published values, not Zone2 laboratory measurements. They make portions comparable but do not tell you which texture, flavour or ingredient list your stomach will accept while running.

How Zone2 selected these running energy bars

The previous version of this guide mixed an obsolete Maurten product with unsupported personal-testing language, precise prices and a fixed eating schedule. This rebuild uses a more reproducible method:

  1. Current primary evidence: each bar needs a live manufacturer page with enough nutrition and ingredient information to support the comparison.
  2. A distinct job: each pick must solve a different practical problem rather than repeating five similar products.
  3. Transparent carbohydrate maths: we use the published per-pack value and explain any discrepancy instead of converting vague serving language into false precision.
  4. Practical limits: fat, fibre, allergens, chewing and intensity are considered alongside carbohydrate.
  5. No price-led ranking: promotions change too quickly to decide a durable editorial order.

Zone2 has not independently tested taste, digestibility, shelf life, wrapper usability or performance effect. “Best” here means the clearest current fit for a stated use case based on published evidence, not a guarantee that the product will work for every runner.

How much carbohydrate might a runner need?

World Athletics’ 2019 consensus statement gives general competition goals of 30–60g of carbohydrate per hour for events lasting 1–2.5 hours and up to 90g per hour beyond 2.5 hours. It also says strategies should be personalised and practised. These are broad sports-nutrition ranges, not an instruction to jump to the highest number.

The British Dietetic Association’s May 2026 guidance says carbohydrate during hard exercise lasting more than an hour can enhance performance, while requirements should be fine-tuned around training load, overall energy needs and feedback. Its examples show that ordinary or sports foods can contribute: two 50g oat bars are given as one example of roughly 50g carbohydrate.

The useful starting principle is to count all carbohydrate. If a drink supplies 30g and a gel supplies 25g, a 40g bar does not arrive in an empty hourly total. Duration, pace, temperature, appetite and previous practice all matter. Runners with diabetes, recurring gastrointestinal symptoms, an eating disorder history, food allergy or another relevant health condition should seek individual advice from an appropriately qualified clinician or registered sports dietitian.

OTE Cookies & Cream Duo Bar: best flexible portion pick

OTE’s Cookies & Cream Duo Bar is a 65g pack containing two pieces. The current manufacturer page lists 260kcal, 40.6g carbohydrate, 7.8g fat, 3.8g fibre and 7.2g protein per pack. OTE describes each half as providing about 20g carbohydrate.

That split is the reason it leads this comparison. A runner can eat one piece, put the other back and keep the arithmetic simple without trying to bite an approximate fraction from a single block. It suits steady long runs, trail days and bike-run sessions where small solid portions are easier to manage than one dense meal.

There are trade-offs. The full pack contributes more fat and fibre than a gel, and the product contains milk, soya and wheat. OTE also gives a may-contain warning for other allergens. A convenient split does not prove either half will be easy to chew or tolerate at race effort. Test the product, the wrapper and the portion during a lower-consequence training run.

TORQ Organic Sun-Drenched Banana: best compact steady-effort pick

TORQ’s Organic Sun-Drenched Banana Energy Bar weighs 45g and is based on oats and banana. The manufacturer uses it as one 30g-carbohydrate unit in its fuelling system and describes it as suitable for endurance exercise, particularly longer and lower-intensity efforts.

The current page also displays a label table containing 34g carbohydrate per 45g bar. Because TORQ’s own planning copy and its label table do not match, Zone2’s calculator uses the more conservative 30g planning value and flags the difference. The wrapper in your hand is the deciding source.

This is the compact option for hiking-paced climbs, trail ultras and long easy running where a soft oat-based solid appeals. The listed 0.7g fat per bar is low compared with the other food-style picks here. However, TORQ explicitly says this type of bar is not ideal for high-intensity exercise. That is a useful limitation, not marketing to ignore: a bar can fit an ultra aid-station strategy without being the right thing during a hard road race.

TORQ labels the product vegan and organic and provides allergen and cross-contact information. “Vegan” does not mean free from all allergens. Read the exact current label if allergy or coeliac disease is relevant.

Maurten Solid 160: best simple 40g carbohydrate unit

Maurten Solid 160 is the current product replacing the Solid 225 named by the old Zone2 page. The GB range and manufacturer FAQ list 160kcal and 40g carbohydrate in an oat-and-rice format. Maurten positions Solid around preloading, lower-to-medium-intensity endurance work lasting more than two hours and the quieter moments between harder efforts.

The neat 40g unit makes spreadsheet planning straightforward. For example, three complete packs mathematically provide 120g carbohydrate. That does not mean three bars are the best way to reach that total: a runner may prefer to divide a pack and combine it with drink or gels.

The important correction is not to transfer claims or nutrition from Solid 225 to Solid 160. Product names, recipes and pack formats change. If you find old stock, use its own wrapper rather than this guide’s current value.

Maurten Solid 160 makes most sense before a long event, during a slower section or as a break from sweet gels. It is not automatically easy to eat while breathing hard. Practise the texture at the effort where you intend to use it and consider how crumbs, water and cold hands affect the experience.

Veloforte Avanti: best nut-and-fruit style pick

Veloforte publishes 36g carbohydrate and 5g protein for its Avanti bar. The ingredient list includes dates, pecans, almonds, maple syrup, brown-rice syrup and sea salt. That makes it the most clearly food-like nut-and-fruit option in this five-bar comparison.

Avanti will appeal to runners who want a change from gels and plain oat blocks during a long trail day. Dates and syrups provide carbohydrate, while nuts change the texture and macronutrient mix. That variety may improve willingness to eat late in a long outing, but it is a preference to test, not an independently proven performance advantage.

The obvious limitation is allergy. Pecans and almonds make this unsuitable for runners with relevant nut allergies, and shared handling or other allergen information should be checked on the current pack. Veloforte describes Avanti as vegan and gluten-free; the Food Standards Agency warns that a vegan claim is not the same as an allergy-safety claim.

The denser ingredient list also means this is better approached as deliberate long-duration food than as a universal substitute for rapidly consumed carbohydrate. Try a small portion with the fluid you will carry and note whether chewing feels manageable on climbs, flats and descents.

Mountain Fuel FeelGoodBar Double Ginger: best slower ultra pick

Mountain Fuel’s 60g Double Ginger FeelGoodBar is a flapjack-style option. The current page lists 284kcal, 31g carbohydrate, 16g fat, 4.7g fibre and 4g protein. The manufacturer marks it vegan and gluten-free.

The high energy content and familiar flapjack format can make sense for walking breaks, aid stations, multi-hour trail events and run-walk adventures where ordinary food is welcome. Ginger offers a distinct flavour when repeated sweet gels become unappealing.

Its limitation is equally clear. At 16g fat and 4.7g fibre per bar, it is not directly comparable with a low-fat gel or drink. Fat and fibre slow the simplicity of the carbohydrate delivery and may be difficult for some runners during higher-intensity work. Zone2 therefore places it in a slower-ultra role rather than calling it an all-purpose running bar.

Do not assume ginger prevents nausea, and do not assume gluten-free or vegan labels cover every allergy or cross-contact risk. Check the current pack, introduce it during training and decide whether the taste remains acceptable after several hours.

How to read an energy-bar label

Start with the serving basis. A nutrition table may show values per 100g, per bar, per half or per multipack. Convert from the value that matches what you will carry, then check these points:

  • Carbohydrate per actual pack: this is the core number for fuelling maths.
  • Fat and fibre: neither is inherently bad, but larger amounts may be less practical at high effort.
  • Protein: useful in overall nutrition, but it does not replace the carbohydrate calculation during endurance work.
  • Allergens and cross-contact: read the complete current statement, not only front-of-pack vegan or gluten-free language.
  • Pack construction: decide whether it can be opened, divided, reclosed and carried without turning into crumbs.
  • Recipe changes: compare the wrapper with saved plans before an important event.

The Food Standards Agency explains the distinction between food allergy, intolerance and coeliac disease and advises consumers to check allergen information. When the consequences of a mistake are serious, do not rely on an old article or product photograph.

Build and test a long-run fuelling plan

  1. Choose the session: record expected duration, effort, route, weather and access to water.
  2. Select a starting carbohydrate target: use professional guidance and your current practice, not the largest number a calculator offers.
  3. Count every source: add bars, gels, chews, drink mix and ordinary food into one total.
  4. Plan portions, not just packs: decide when a half-bar or bite is realistic and how the remainder stays clean.
  5. Practise at relevant effort: chewing during an easy run does not prove the same food works at marathon pace.
  6. Record the outcome: note appetite, stomach response, thirst, energy, weather and unused food.
  7. Change one variable: adjust quantity, format or timing gradually so the next result is interpretable.

Carry, weather and hydration considerations

A mathematically tidy plan can fail if it does not fit the vest. Lay out food, fluid, mandatory kit, phone and layers before the long run. Keep food away from soft flasks that could leak, and place early portions where they can be reached without removing the pack. Heat can soften coatings and cold can harden dense food. Rain and sweat make paper wrappers difficult to handle. Test the complete packed system in realistic conditions and carry litter out.

Plan hydration separately from carbohydrate. World Athletics advises runners not to drink beyond sweat losses. A carbohydrate target does not reveal personal sweat rate, sodium loss or fluid need, and salt in a bar does not make excessive drinking safe. Urine colour, thirst and scale changes have limitations, so runners with a history of hydration problems should seek individual guidance.

Allergies, coeliac disease and competitive sport

Ingredient suitability is not a ranking badge. Milk, wheat, soya, oats and nuts appear across this shortlist, while cross-contact warnings vary. The Food Standards Agency specifically notes that vegan food may be unsuitable for people with allergies because vegan labelling addresses animal ingredients, not allergen cross-contact. Use the manufacturer’s current allergen statement and the physical wrapper.

Competitive athletes are responsible for substances in their bodies. Ordinary foods are not automatically supplements, but bars marketed with added performance ingredients can blur that line. UK Anti-Doping says batch testing can reduce supplement risk but cannot eliminate it. Athletes subject to anti-doping rules should understand strict liability and use UKAD’s current supplement-risk process rather than assuming a “natural” claim is protection.
