The same air temperature can feel very different in still, dry sunshine and exposed wind-driven rain. How to layer without overheating
The most useful model is base, optional midlayer and protective outer. Each part has a different job, and not every run needs all three.
1. Base layer: manage moisture next to the skin
A base layer should fit comfortably under the rest of the system, move sweat away from the skin and avoid seams or folds that rub. A light synthetic can suit hard efforts or mild winter days. Fabric names are not guarantees. A heavy merino top may hold more moisture than a lighter synthetic; a very warm thermal can become uncomfortable during hill repetitions. Test the layer close to home, open zips early and begin an ordinary run feeling slightly cool rather than already hot.
2. Midlayer: removable warmth for lower output
Add a breathable midlayer when the planned effort is easy, the route is exposed, the run includes walking or stops, or the consequences of cooling are high. A thin grid fleece or other low-bulk top is more adaptable than stacking several tight base layers. On a long route, the ability to remove and carry it matters as much as warmth at the front door.
Do not assume that more insulation is always safer. Sweat trapped in the system can cool rapidly when pace drops or wind increases. Vent a zip, push sleeves up where practical or remove the midlayer before it becomes saturated. A hard session may need less clothing during the work interval but a dry or warm layer for the recovery and journey home.
3. Outer layer: choose wind or rain protection deliberately
A breathable wind-resistant jacket is often the more comfortable answer to dry, cold wind. A waterproof shell is the stronger choice for sustained rain, sleet, exposed routes or an event that requires one. Water-resistant is not the same as waterproof: a treated woven jacket may shed a short shower but should not be presented as protection for prolonged rain.
Waterproof membranes and taped seams reduce water entry, but every shell has limits. Rain can enter through openings, the face fabric can wet out, and sweat can accumulate inside when output exceeds the garment’s ability to move moisture. Look for a secure hood where appropriate, a zip that can be vented, cuffs that work with gloves and enough room for the intended layers. Legs, hands, head and feet

A thin beanie, cap, headband or buff can cover the ears without excessive bulk. Choose something that remains secure in wind and does not block hearing more than necessary near traffic. A brim can reduce rain in the eyes; it is not eye protection from branches or driven debris.
Socks should fit without wrinkling and allow the toes to move. Thicker is not automatically warmer if it compresses the foot or makes the shoe tight. Winter running shoes: match the surface
There is no “winter shoe” that controls every wet, muddy and icy surface. Road rubber, trail-lug shape, ground condition, contamination and outsole wear all affect traction. Use road shoes for clear pavements, trail shoes for the terrain they are designed to bite into, and fell shoes where steep soft ground demands aggressive grip. On ice, change the route before buying traction. Short steps and a suitable outsole cannot guarantee grip on black ice, polished stone or frozen timber. Microspikes and studded systems are surface-specific tools, not permission to run normally across mixed tarmac, indoor floors or exposed ground. Visibility for dark winter running
The current Highway Code rules for pedestrians distinguish poor daylight from darkness. Rule 3 says to wear or carry something light-coloured, bright or fluorescent in poor daylight, and to use reflective material in the dark. It says reflective material can be seen by drivers using headlights up to three times as far away as non-reflective material.
That does not make a reflective jacket an invisibility cure. Placement, cleanliness, movement, vehicle approach, weather and the driver’s attention all matter. Combine contrast and reflection with route choice and, when the route needs it, an active light. A local road loop allows an easy exit, but traffic, dark crossings and ice at untreated edges remain important. A wooded trail adds mud, roots, water and reduced signal. Fell terrain can add severe wind, rapid weather change, navigation error and a long delay before help. Dress for the slowest plausible part of the outing, not only the intended running pace.

The longer and more remote the run, the more the checklist should cover a slowdown or stop. Consider:
- a pack that holds the load securely without hiding critical reflective areas;
- a charged phone protected from rain, with important route and contact information available offline;
- map and compass where the terrain requires them, plus the skill to use both;
- food and fluid appropriate to duration, access and individual tolerance;
- a dry or warmer layer, spare gloves and emergency cover for remote exposure;
- any medication you normally carry, plus identification and emergency contact details;
- a route and expected-return plan shared with someone when the consequences justify it.

The decision system is the same: exposure, weather, effort, route, duration and light. A separate pink checklist is not useful. Cold-injury warning signs
Persistent shivering, slurred speech, slow breathing, unusual tiredness or confusion can indicate hypothermia. The NHS hypothermia guidance says suspected hypothermia is a medical emergency: go to A&E or call 999. Do not continue the run to “warm up”. Get the person to shelter, remove wet clothing if safe, wrap them in dry blankets or clothing and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.
